Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I got a few books Christmas and I'm going to review one of them today!
I started reading Beach Read on the afternoon of the 2nd of January and by midnight I had finished reading. I think I just ignored everyone for a good few hours, only made an appearance whenever I needed a drink or food. Normally I wouldn't mind reading that fast, in fact, I sometimes prefer it, but it really annoyed me that I finished Beach Read that fast. As soon as I finished reading I had to pick up it again because I couldn't process what I had just read and I couldn't bear to say goodbye to Gus and January.
Information About The Book:
January is a hopeless romantic who narrates her life like she's the lead in a blockbuster movie.
Gus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy tale.
But January and Gus have more in common than you'd think:
They're both broke.
They both have crippling writer's block.
And they need to write bestsellers before summer ends.
The result? A bet to swap genres and see who gets published first.
The risk? In telling each other's stories, their worlds might be changed entirely...
It's not often I read a romance book but I'm so glad I started the year off with this one. I really entered 2022 on a happy note which is always a good sign. The only annoying thing I found was that I read Beach Read in the middle of winter and it honestly made me crave for summer. As I'm writing this review, it's pouring down with rain and it's 6 degrees. However I am moving to a seaside town soon so I will be taking Beach Read to the beach and have at it.
Everything about January and Gus screams Enemies to Lovers. From when they were at college together, when they meet again in North Bear Shores, even when it comes to the bet they have with writing their books. They both have their flaws, they both have to learn how to love again and they both have to learn how to trust each other. Other than that, THEY ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER!
I know it's typical to fall in love with lead male characters in romance novels but Gus Everett is adorable. This is probably one of my favourite interactions between January and Gus:
"Bullshit. You called me a fairy princess."
He coughed out a laugh. "Because you're the bright light! Don't you get it?" He shook his head. "It's not about what's happened. It's about how you cope with things, who you are. You've always been this fierce fucking light, and even when you're at your worst, when you feel angry and broken, you still know how to be a person. How to tell people you- you love them."
I just love them so much, they're not the typical cutesy romantic couple. They have banter, they push each other's buttons but not to the point of causing any upset. I may also love them because I have fallen in love with Gus... just a tiny little bit. After reading Beach Read for a second time, I did think about that scene in Friends. The one where Rachel is talking to Monica about her new assistant Tag and she says "He's so pretty, I want to cry"? Yeah that's how I felt about Augustus "Gus" Everett.
What I'm trying to say is that I love Beach Read by Emily Henry and I will be buying more of her books and more books from the rom-com genre. It's a new phase in my life which I'm looking forward to!
See you all next time!
